they think neceſſary or expedient for correcting
Abuſes and Inconveniences ariſing from the
Nature of ſuch Grants.

But if under Colour of correcting Abuſes,
they encroach on the Rights of the Grantee,
they not only injure the private Owner; but
they invalidate and derogate from their own
Acts.

Reformation is a noble Idea, and a noble
Employment for Government; but they will
not purſue it croſs the Lines of Juſtice, and
the Barriers of Civil Property.

Parliament granted this Iſle to the Anceſtors
of the Duke. This Grant has eventually be-
come inconvenient to the Public. They wiſh
to reſume it: They cannot make this Re-
ſumption by diſmembring it Parcel by Parcel;
but they muſt do it directly by Compenſation.
And let it be underſtood, that whatever a Sub-
ject poſſeſſes under a regular and valid Grant,
whether it be Priviledge, Immunity, Juriſ-
diction or patrimonial Inheritance, it is com-
priſed in the Eye of all Laws under the Idea
of Property.

But it is ſaid that this Bill does not take
away the Rights of the Proprietor, or affect
