Assault and Deforce the Officers of the Revenue in the
execution of their Duty, and by the great neglect of
their proper, useful, and necessary Occupations in the
Country.

That your Memorialists think the Interior
Commerce of the Isle of Man is of no less serious
Consequence to the Revenue of Excise, as there are no
Laws that they know of, to prevent it. That the Chief
Trade, and which has been of late established there, is
the Brewery, which is now arisen to a very great height,
for by some accounts your Memorialists have lately received,
and which they believe to be perfectly authentic, there
are several Breweries established there, which are more
than sufficient to consume all the Barley they can
collect from the West parts of Great Britain, and from
Ireland; And as they receive the Bounty upon all
the Barley they Import, and are, by Malting the same
upon the Island, free from the Malt Duty paid by
the Brewers in Great Britain, they can, according to
the best Information your Memorialists can procure,
carry on this Trade to an Advantage of more than
Forty p^r Cent, the fatal consequences of which are so
extreamly glaring, that they think it needless to take
up your Lordships time with enumerating them.

That there is likewise a Tannery carried on
upon this Island, which your Memorialists do not,
indeed, believe can be extended to any very great degree,
