to their late~~st~~ Posterity was invaded–
a Resistance in which your
Memorialists have the consolation
to reflect, they have been abundantly
justified by the Opinions and Reports
of the Law Officers of the Crown, both
in England and in this Isle (and to
which they beg leave to refer your
Excellency) as well as by the success
which in the event attended their
Endeavours. It is equally notorious
that the Measures to which the
Keys were reluctantly driven on
that occasion had every Sanction
and Authority that the Resolves
of a public and political Assembly
could confer. The Sums expended
in that national Struggle, and
Defence were subscribed and
lent upon a Vote of Credit, sundry
and successive Resolves of the
House of Keys and upon the
Faith and Confidence of an Act
for the Reimbursment— The
Public have benefited by the
expenditure
