for the interment of the Dead. From
the Ruins of fortified Hills and Borrows
in many parts of the Island it would
appear that this species of Solidity was
by no means uncommon in the
fortified places of the Primitive
inhabitants of these Islands. From
this simple plan then, the castle
seems to have been improved to its
present Gothic & Massive strength
the antiquity of which is evidently
referable to an age previous to the
14^th Century; therefore supposing the
Existence of the Primitive fort to
have been proved the original of
the Castle, the Era of its foundation
is thrown into a very remote age
and the authenticity of the inscription
is established.

Traditionary History dates the erection
of Castle Rushen in 960 A.D. only
