Rebuilding the House of Keys
Castle Rushen Isle of Man 18th April 1817
Lt Govr Smelt to the Right Honble Lord Viscount Sidmouth
My Lord
In consequence of the repeated representation that have been made to me by
the Members of the House of Keys of the ruinous state into which their House
of assembling has fallen, and of their want of Funds to rebuild the same, I
directed the Clerk of the works resident in this Island to furnish me with the
enclosed Plan and estimate to be laid before your Lordship. I beg to assure
your Lordship. I beg to assure your Lordship that, from my own inspection, the
house is quite unfit for the Members to meet in, and that from the importance
of their duties as well Legislative as Judicial, it is a point of real importance
to the Island at large that a suitable [house] with accommodations for the Suitors
[should] be provided and I therefore beg [leave] to recommend the adoption of
the enclosed Plan to your Lordship.
