The outline of coast within the Blue and Red limits, with the exception of the Lake boundaries indicates the present outline of the Island. The sea current running with great force from Peel northward to Jurby Point has gradually washed away the drift gravel formation, and deposited a portion of the same at the Point of Ayre. Several other changes from similar causes have taken place at Shellack Promontory, Langness, and Niarbyl Point. In the arrangement of the work I have been guided by the Admiralty .Speed’s, Bullock’s, and Drinkwater’s maps. The area of the largo tracks of land washed away by the sea-in the N.W. and other parts of the Island is computed from private Estate Plans and the Tithe Maps deposited Rolls Office. That portion of the Island from 54° 20' northwards, indicated by horizontal lines, represents low marshy ground. The land (marked red) at the Point of Ayre and Douglas Bay is of recent formation. W. The muniments contained in the present volume form the civil and political history of the Isle of Man: and, though their use will be chiefly confined to the scholar and the antiquary, still the history of the people may be read by a reference to corresponding parts of particular events. They embrace a period from 1134 to Henry the Fourths time, and will eventually be brought down to near the present epoch. When completed, it is hoped they will form the basis of an enlarged account of the Island, the real history of which has yet to be written.
