With respect to the 2. point Although the
Regiment was reported compleat early in
March 1809. No Steps were taken to call for
the volunteering until February 1810. when
recruiting parties were sent to the Island
and at the same time an order arrived
for the reduction of the Regiment to four
companies. To this alone can the failure
be ascribed. The Volunteering commenced
on Monday morning the 5^th of March. In
the course of that day 23 were approved and
inlisted – The order for reduction arrived the
same day at night – a number of men who
had stood forward in the course of the
Evening of that day, having engaged to
inlist the next Morning, immediately
determined to take the chance of their
discharge from the Service altogether before
they would inlist with any of the parties
Thus on the 24^th of March the day of the
Expiration of the period for Volunteering
only 43 Volunteers were approved a and
300 Privates besides Noncommissioned Officers
and Drummers of 14 Companies were
discharged
