An Extensive Line of Coast, within a short
distance of Great Britain and Ireland,
must necessarily call for the distribution of
numerous detachments round the Island
independently of the assistance required by
the civil power to controul a population
of Forty Thousand Inhabitants, which of
late Years has been much increased and
continues to increase by the influx of a
description of people, that require more
than the ordinary course of the civil power
to controul; and consequently additional
strength to the present reduced ~~——~~

principal Towns in the Island.

The present distribution of the Regiment
according to L^t Governors Smetts orders is
annexed N^o 1.

The protection of the Revenue, and
Peace of the Island requires some addition
to the present Force, particularly at Douglas
and Ramsay – The former place, being
the principal port. The Depot of Stores
of the ordnance. and of the Regiment;
The Station of the Custom House &c. with
a population of about Seven Thousand
