To the Right Hon^ble his Majestys Post M^r General
The Memorial of William Nicholson
Sheweth
That your Memorialist has had the
honour of being Contractor for the Packet
Stationed between Whitehaven & Douglas Isle
of Mann for above twenty one years, and has
also acted as Postmaster in the Isle of Mann
for near five years with credit & reputation to
himself, and with Justice as your Lordships Servant.
That since the arrival of Gov^r Smith in
November last his Excellency thought proper to
detain the Packet six trips out of nine, and
in consequence thereof his Grace the Duke of
Atholls Agent along with the Notary Publick
came to the Post office in order to investigate
the grounds of the Packets detention, which your
Memorialist in vindication of his own conduct
informed the Complainants that it was by order
of the Governor, and in Justice to the Public at
large asserted the fact as laid before your Lordship.
It is with much concern your Memorialist
finds it necessary to acquaint your Lordship
that since that event, the Governor is so irritated
against your Memorialist that his Excellency has
made many attempts to injure your Memorialist
which having failed in the Governor has actually
gone so far as to commence an Action at Common
Law against me, as also two of his Women Servants
