Memorandums

The common people are badly accomodated in the com=
forts of life, their dress a jacket of whitish Cloth, their
Shoes a Sole of wood or leather tied above with thongs
like antient Sandals, gives them the figure of wretch=
=edness & indolence

They have no notion of Agriculture, Carts
they have not, a drill plough was lately thought a prodigy,
any lime they burn is carried from the Quarry or horse=
=back, a Stone on each Side & one atop making
the load. They bring their corn to Mill unthreshed
& it is there trodden out very bunglingly. They never
saw Turnips in a field till lately. Notwithstanding of
all this almost every man is an attorney And as all
attorneys are rascals, law suits among them are
multiplied to an immensity and the poor are fleeced in
proportion— In a word the Country is 100 years behind
even Scotland in every improvement What a field of
action is therefore opened for an for an enterprising
young proprietor whose efforts if rightly directed must
in a few years perform wonders and ~~perpetuate~~ his name
as the father and benefactor of his people.

At present 2— C monopolizes every thing
and has amassed a large fortune by cheating some
body, he is universally detested, but his office on the
Chancery Court & his being the proprietors Manager
gives him such ~~power~~ weight that none dare oppose or
expose his transactions..

His Colleague and Depute are nearly in
similar circumstances They have little inclination
to act properly, but if they had they dare not so long as
2— C holds the rod of despotism over them. One
Luce an Attorney is by no means inferior to 2—
— C in any qualification except ~~power~~ riches.

The Bishop is far from popular & gives
but Attention to the real good of the Country.

It will be much the proprietors interest
to visit the Country frequently— and to carry
