OBSERVATIONS

*On the Petition to the House of Commons, of the
Keys of the Isle of Man.*

IN order to explain and elucidate some of
the allegations in the preceding Petition, it has
been thought necessary, on the part of the Keys,
for the information of members of the House of
Commons, to whom all transactions respecting
this small Island must necessarily be unknown,
to annex to the Petition a few particulars re-
lating to the various, long-pending, and seem-
ingly interminable disputes between his Grace
the Duke of Athol and the inhabitants of that
Island.

Its connexion with his Grace has been the
result of accident.

The crown-rights in that Island were first
granted to Sir John Stanley, by Henry IVth,
about the year 1405. James, tenth Earl of Derby,
the lineal descendant of Sir John Stanley, died
in 1736, without issue. His heir-general was a
Duke of Athol, as descended from the third
daughter of James the seventh Earl of Derby,
Lady Amelia Stanley, who had married, during
the civil wars, an Earl of Athol. For some
