the Surveyor of the Riding Officers, was the
Person who had obtained private Information
from the Mariners, that they had landed
Tea in the Island abovementioned, and
in answer to Our enquiries directed to him in
particular, he related the Circumstances
of this transaction, and the Motives which
influenced his Conduct in the Letter which
We herewith inclose. The Merit of his
late Services, his apparent Zeal for the
Interest of the Revenue, and the Nature of
the Facts themselves, convince Us, that he
would certainly have made a Seizure of this
Vessel; could he by any means have obtained
a legal and adequate proof sufficient to
Support it, and that he was not biassed by
any partial or Interested regard whatever.
We seriously exhorted him, and the other
Principal Officers of the Port, to keep a
Jealous Eye upon the future proceedings of
this Ship in particular, and exert their
best endeavours to procure such proof as may
Justify the Seizure of her, after the next
Importation
